  • When Life Gives You Tangerines’ Extras Accuse Makers Of Mistreatment: “They Forced Us To…

The makers of the series have been accused of unacceptable behaviour towards the extras on set, and damaging the props used in the series

One of Netflix’s most popular K-dramas When Life Gives You Tangerines has recently found itself embroiled in a controversy. The prop team as well as some of the extras on set have complained about rude behaviour and ill-treatment.

One of the production members shared a tweet on X, stating how the props were damaged by the makers. When questioned about it, the prop team was met with unacceptable behaviour. Furthermore, an extra also tweeted about how they were treated as slaves and forced to shave their heads. The reason behind such misbehaviour was that the series team did not want to spend any additional money on the well-being of any other cast members, except the lead actors.

    What

    • When Life Gives You Tangerines makers have been called out for their harsh behaviour towards the prop team and extras on set.
    • A X account shared an instance experienced by the Prop team,  “Let me tell you something interesting. Our company staff were stationed on the set to “facilitate” the use of the props (we really were just there to keep an eye on them) because the production team had zero skills to operate the retro buses or large props that we rented or made for them, and they damaged them all. They were either ignorant or irresponsible. Of course, we took photos of it all and made claims later.”
    • Furthermore, the prop team member alleged,  “I still remember it. They were caught trying to use lacquer from ironwork stores to stencil the bus, and the person who did it said that “can’t you just use lacquer thinner to remove it?” He was really unrepentant about it that he ended up being cursed out so much. The ignorant brat who thought that lacquer thinner is a magic potion that could cleanly erase just only the lacquer spray went around the set acting a fool.”
    • As soon as the tweets went viral, other members of the crew such as the extras also spoke up.
    • The extras voiced their concerns for the mistreatment they had to deal with, “There’s a detested, yet famous schedule amongst the extras for WLGYT too… They forced extras to shave their heads, and despite being a Netflix production, nothing was provided. They didn’t want to spend money on anyone else appearing on the show but the main actors. They even neglected the elderly extras in the cold winter and made people starve without providing a food truck or craft table, throwing us to a random restaurant and telling us to eat within 30 minutes.”
    • The extras added that they were deprived of basic amenities. To add to it, they weren’t provided with insulating innerwear in the dead of winter, because the makers said it would ruin the fit of the costumes. They concluded by saying that “they were treated like slaves.”

    Response Of The Production Team

No formal response has been issued from the production team of When Life Gives You Tangerines, yet. As the tweets continue to go viral, viewers are probing Netflix and the show’s producers for further investigation.

    The Plot

When Life Gives You Tangerines is a slice-of-life K-drama series which is directed by Kim Won-Seok and led by IU, Park Bo-gum, Moon So-ri, and Park Hae-joon.

The storyline revolves around a poor girl named Ae-sun who wants to become a poet. It is also a beautiful love story between Ae-sun and a young boy named Gwan-si, which spans over five decades in South Korea.

Set against the backdrop of Jeju island, the plot explores the relationship of the lead pair as they combat several personal and historical challenges such as political unrest and changing family dynamics.

It is a testament to the power of everlasting love and the importance of family and community through changing times.

    In A Nutshell

The viral tweets from the prop team and the extras from the When Life Gives You Tangerines sets, have veered the focus on the makers of the show. The production team has been accused of misbehaviour and harsh treatment while filming, which include being deprived of basic necessities like warm clothing, food trucks, craft tables, or any sign of comfort. An official statement from the producers is awaited.

  • The Royals’ On Netflix Sparks Royal Rumble Over “Stereotypes, Narratives”

The Maharani of Baroda, Radhikaraje Gaekwad, put out a post on Instagram in which she highlighted that the erstwhile royals in India play a key role in preserving India’s heritage.

Certain storylines on ‘The Royals’ on Netflix have sparked a furore among some of India’s erstwhile royal families, with one ‘queen’ commenting that the stereotype of rajas “soaked in whiskey and profligacy” and Ranis “in chiffons and pearls” continues to define them, but their contributions don’t get too much attention. Heritage platform Royal Fables, which covers such families, also put out a post “on behalf of 565 princely states” objecting to the way royals are portrayed in the show.

The Royal Fables’ post itself, however, also saw some backlash, with some on social media accusing it of being tone deaf and embarrassing.

the Royals’, starring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, portrays a modern-day royal family struggling to maintain its crumbling palace, which is approached by the CEO of a hospitality startup, who proposes turning it into a luxury bed-and-breakfast. Sub-plots include the royal family’s dysfunction and the sale of a valuable painting.

The Maharani of Baroda, Radhikaraje Gaekwad, put out a post on Instagram in which she highlighted that the erstwhile royals in India are still respected and play a key role in preserving the country’s heritage.

“One would imagine the royals of India, a community abundantly chronicled, photographed, biographed, and today well positioned in a range of arenas from politics, hospitality, to magazine covers, would have a better chance of surviving an on screen portrayal such as the one in The Royals. Alas, that was not to be and such is our fate, since 1947…” she lamented.

“What began as a post-independence, politically motivated propaganda of stereotypical Rajas soaked in whiskey and profligacy and Ranis in chiffons and pearls, continues to define us,” she added.

Ms Gaekwad pointed out that India is one of the only countries where royals reigned for centuries without “any known instances of revolt or assassination”.

“India has also seen some of their finest statesmen, diplomats, wildlife conservationists, bureaucrats, army officers, educationists, sportsmen, hoteliers and entrepreneurs emerge from royalty and today our palaces, forts and museums are perhaps the last few sentinels of India’s undiluted, apolitical patronage and cultural history, all maintained in our personal capacity. Yet… our own country continues to view us – all 565 families and a few thousand nobility, with an odd mixture of awe, ignorance and distaste,” she wrote.

Ms Gaekwad also said some of these families engage in charitable work, run some of India’s best-known music festivals and museums, and sustain traditions and festivals like the Dussehra of Mysore and the Holi of Jaipur and Udaipur.

    ‘False Narratives’

In an open letter to Netflix, Royal Fables said some “false narratives”  were created by the show and that the erstwhile royals contribute to Indian culture while keeping their legacy alive, without much help.

“First off, royal families are not POOR. They are not selling their palaces or making money from bat poop! They are land owners and inheritors of a rich legacy that they are monetising,” it said in the letter, adding, “Agreed, conserving palaces is a tough task. Our back breaks if we have to white wash our flats! They have to restore a 400-year-old, 100 rooms monument without losing the historic essence of the property. And no caring corporate or government helps them in the process (sic).”

The post, however, also attracted criticism from social media users, with one sneering, “Privileged offending the privileged is my most favourite genre.”

“This is amongst the most hilariously embarrassing things I’ve ever read in my life. Please for your own sakes, delete it and pretend it never happened,” another wrote.

  • Netflix Makes Mega Bid For Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par To Beat YouTube Premiere Strategy: Report

Netflix bids a huge amount of Rs 125 crore to buy the digital rights for Sitaare Zameen Par, after Aamir Khan’s call for a YouTube Pay-Per-View model

Aamir Khan’s upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par is all set to hit cinema screens on June 20, 2025. While the film is already making waves, it’s also grabbing headlines for a different reason.

According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, Netflix has more than doubled its initial offer to bag the digital rights for Sitaare Zameen Par. The streaming giant, which first offered around Rs 50–60 crore, has now come back with a massive Rs 125 crore bid to secure the much-awaited film.

The sharp increase is a response to Aamir Khan‘s strong push for an alternative digital release model — specifically, YouTube Pay-Per-View.

    What’s Happening

    • Netflix had initially offered Rs 50-60 crore to buy the digital rights of Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par. Latest report suggests that the OTT platform has now made a bid of Rs 125 crore to lock the deal.
    • This staggering jump is because of Aamir Khan’s decision on opting for a YouTube Pay-Per-View digital release model.
    • The report also mentions that Aamir Khan’s bold stance has apparently shaken up traditional streaming platforms. In a bid to keep Sitaare Zameen Par off YouTube, Netflix is now leading the race with its aggressive offer.
    • “The film’s move to a YouTube Pay-Per-View model could disrupt the whole ecosystem. If Aamir pulls it off, it will embolden more filmmakers to go direct-to-audience via open platforms. This would mean streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon will now have to compete with a format that is cheaper, more accessible, and less exclusive,” a senior industry insider close to the negotiations told the publication.
    • They added, “For Netflix, acquiring Sitaare Zameen Par is no longer just about the film’s potential – it’s about protecting their turf. Aamir’s audience reach and the credibility of the project make it a pivotal moment for OTT strategy in India.”

    About Sitaare Zameen Par

Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par is a spiritual sequel to Aamir Khan’s 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. The original also featured Darsheel Safary and Tisca Chopra in important roles.

Bankrolled by Aamir Khan Productions, Sitaare Zameen Par features Genelia D’Souza as the female lead. The movies also introduces 10 debutants – Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra and Simran Mangeshkar.
